How Do Co-ops Work?

NEC Co-op is a non-profit electricity provider. Co-ops were formed decades ago to offer service to residents in rural areas—read more on how it all got started. Today, there are over 1,000 cooperatives formed across the nation. And once they join, members are sticking around.

Becoming a Member

When you enroll as a customer, you become a “member”—which also means you share in the ownership. It’s different than the investor-owned utilities or power suppliers—because our profits go right back to the members (you), in the form of credits or cash payment at the end of every year.

It’s reliable electricity at the lowest price possible without the gimmicks—and the kind of benefits that matter to our members.
